Description
In this web-based manipulative, the blocks pictured in the workspace have the attributes of Size (Large, Small), Shape (Circle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Pentagon), and Color (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green). Each problem presents the user with a collection of blocks within the central oval that share a common attribute. The task is to identify (mentally) the common attribute and then to move into the central oval (click and drag) all of the outside blocks that share the given attribute. The Check button either indicates that the task has been done correctly and identifies the attribute ("All blocks inside are ...") or advises "Try again."
For young users, it may be helpful first to talk about the shapes and colors and sizes, using the cursor to pick out a blue rectangle or a small yellow block or all of the large blocks. The manipulative lends itself either to group activities with a classroom projector where the teacher or students can control the mouse-dragging, or to individual work.
Content Provider
The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a three-year NSF supported project to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-8 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation. For more information, please visit http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html.
